Following the near obsession we all had with Netflix's The Tiger King in lockdown 1.0 (side note: how does that feel like yesterday while also 10,000 years ago?) Louis Theroux has announced a second Joe Exotic documentary.

Back in 2011, Louis spent time with Joe at his zoo for the BBC documentary America’s Most Dangerous Pets. And while he's since revisited the story in an opinion piece around the time Tiger King came out - and also in his retrospective lockdown programmes - the BBC have announced a new feature-length instalment, Louis Theroux: The Cult of Joe Exotic.

The press release reveals Louis will returns to Oklahoma to explore what has happened to Joseph Maldonado-Passage, better known as Joe Exotic, since the pair first met. Joe now resides in a Federal Prison, having been found guilty of a murder-for-hire plot and multiple animal cruelty charges, but is looking for a pardon from the US government.

The documentary will look back at unseen footage of Louis and Joe, while also interviewing Joe's closest friends to explore what's happened in the last year or so. Speaking of the documentary, Louis explained:

"This is one of those quintessentially American stories, taking place in the heartland of Oklahoma, with a cast of characters almost too colourful and larger-than-life to be believed. I spent eight or nine days filming at the park back in 2011, over the course of three separate visits.

"I’d forgotten how much we shot until I went back into the footage during lockdown. It’s extraordinary how much was there. Since then the story just got stranger and bigger, and in going back at the end of last year I uncovered a real-life drama that took me in directions I never could have expected."

No word of when Louis Theroux: The Cult of Joe Exotic will air on BBC, but we'll certainly be waiting for it.
