Take a Look Back at Prince Charles and Princess Diana's Engagement Photos

Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer met when Charles dated Diana's older sister, Sarah. However, once their relationship ended, it was several years before Diana and Charles began dating. The pair reconnected in 1980.

Charles and Diana only dated for six months before they became engaged. It was later revealed that they met in person just 13 times before Charles proposed.

Despite the couple's 12 year age difference, they enjoyed each other's company and Diana accepted Charles's proposal right away.

Following the engagement announcement, the pair cozied up for an engagement photoshoot.

For the photographs, Diana wore a cobalt blue skirt suit, made by British label Cojana. She paired the suit with a white blouse with a bow neck, white stockings, low black heels, and a black leather clutch.

Charles chose to wear a grey suit, blue and white polka dot tie, light blue button-down, and a white handkerchief.

The engagement photographs were taken outside at Buckingham Palace.

The royal couple were captured in some candid shots, alongside the posed ones.

After their photoshoot, the couple participated in a joint, televised interview. This has since become tradition for newly engaged, royal couples. Both the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were interviewed after their engagement announcements.

Diana made history in a number of ways but, notably, she was the first woman of any nationality to have held a paying job before becoming engaged to the heir. In the late 1970s, Diana lived in London and took a series of low-paying jobs, including working as a dance instructor, nanny, pre-school assistant, and hostess.

Charles presented Diana with this jaw-dropping engagement ring, made from a 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire, surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds and set in 18-karat white gold. The ring, created by British jeweler Garrard, now belongs to Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

According to the ring's jeweler, House of Garrard, "Prince Charles had always seen this beautiful sapphire brooch of his mother's" and "when he went to House of Garrard he saw that ring, and thought it was perfect."

The couple actually kept their engagement a secret for three weeks before announcing it to the public.

Just six months after their engagement, the couple married in a famously lavish royal wedding at London's St. Paul's Cathedral. In total, the pair began dating and were married within roughly one year.
