Sylvie on 'Loki' Has a Different Comics Origin

Loki's new character, Sylvie, has fans raising tons of questions. Originally dubbed colloquially as Lady Loki (Sophia di Martino), the secretive character is turning out to be someone ever so different from what fans may have initially thought.

The premise of the show follows Loki (Tom Hiddleston) after he's captured by the Time Variance Authority (TVA), an entire world of pencil pushers and armed task forces dedicated to keeping the universe on one timeline. Loki pairs up with Agent Mobius (played by a white-haired Owen Wilson) to take down a variant causing trouble in the timeline: another version of Loki.

After the third episode, it looks like di Martino's character is actually a mix between Enchantress and Lady Loki. She's confirmed to have mind-control (the show calls it "enchanting") powers, but shares a similar background to Loki, in her own timeline. She could still assume the name of Enchantress later, but it's too soon to tell. For now, fans can still look to the character's comic background for any comparisons to the MCU character.

Who is Sylvie/Enchantress in the Comics?

In the comics, Sylvie Ashton is a regular girl from Broxton, Oklahoma. Her life changes irrevocably when the Asgardians decide to make her town their new home. One day, she wakes up with magic powers, including sorcery, teleportation, and telekinesis. Ashton takes on the name Enchantress (inspired by the Asgardian Amora) and joins the Young Avengers. She even takes on a faux Asgardian accent sometimes. She eventually discovers she's actually been given powers by Loki himself, for no real reason other than–you guessed it–causing mischief.

After the second episode, one fan noticed a possible hint to Sophia di Martino's character in the international credits of the second episode. It was then confirmed in episode 3, when di Martino's character announced her alias as Sylvie.

What could Sylvie/Enchantress be up to in Loki and the MCU?

As the series unfolds, we'll have to see what di Martino's character means for the greater plot of Loki, and for the future of the MCU. Since di Martino is sporting her natural British accent, it doesn't seem like she's playing the Oklahoman from the comics. However, she could still take on the Enchantress mantle.

Enchantress's introduction could mean the MCU is diving further into the Young Avengers, or maybe there could be a Wanda vs. Enchantress super powerful witch battle to come. She also ended episode 2 basically setting off a bunch of "time bombs" in the Roxxcart store, which may be opening that Multiverse we've been hearing so much about.

Regardless, there are still three episodes to go of Loki and a lot more to reveal. And, uh, there's always that whole Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness situation coming in 2022, which is surely an opportunity to follow-up on any time-traveling, multiverse-hopping threads that Loki might leave open.
