'Loki' Is Already Savagely Trolling Marvel Fans With Mephisto in Episode One
No. For the love of god, no. Not this again.
You have to know what we're talking about. The time-traveling scene in the first episode of Loki. It's the 1850s. Owen Wilson's Mobius M. Mobius is at a church. Behind him? A massive, stained glass image of the devil. Yep. Remember the poor fans who spent the entirety of WandaVision speculating that the famed comics villain Mephisto (Marvel's version of the devil) would show up at the last second? Yep. In what will surely incinerate every superhero Reddit thread ever, Marvel is savagely trolling the same fans who damn near prayed to Mephisto during WandaVision.
Fine. OK. We can't help but ask. Is there anything to the reference?
"It's honestly just a super weird coincidence. Like, it's genuinely a reference to Loki. The horns, he was cast out of heaven, that's what it's a reference to," Loki director Kate Herron told Entertainment Tonight. "I did see all the stuff about that online and I was like, Oh, this is going to be interesting. But no, it's more relevant to the themes of our show and it’s not a nod to that character."
Suuuuuure. No. Kidding. Kind of. I don't know! Can we even trust anyone employed by Marvel nowadays to tell us what's actually happening? Mephisto showing up in Loki is an exciting germ of a thought. Imagine the God of Mischief taking on the freakin' devil? Or worse, teaming up with him? It seems like Loki's evil variant twin is the big bad for now, but you know that there will be some kind of twist along the way.
Either way, I'm sure that the image (and whatever strange devil candy Mobius gave that kid) will keep the fans fed for weeks. C'mon, Marvel. Let us rest.
