Local celebrities take to social media to celebrate Singapore’s 56th birthday
SINGAPORE – With the familiar National Day Parade delayed to 21st August due to the pandemic, local celebrities took to social media to celebrate the nation’s 56th birthday. Comprising of heartfelt posts and song medleys, Yahoo Lifestyle SEA gathers some of the must-see dedications from local stars during his challenging year.
JJ Lin
Back in Singapore, local singer JJ Lin shared a medley of familiar songs including “Home”, “Our Singapore”, and “The Road Ahead” on his IGTV, amassing over 270,000 views in a day. Wishing the country a happy 56th birthday, Lin wrote that he is “glad to be home to celebrate with family and friends, and to be reminded of the strong fortress of love and support all around!”
Zoe Tay
Posing against a gorgeous backdrop of the Marina Bay Sands with the lit-up Supertrees at Gardens by the Bay, Queen of Caldecott Hill Zoe Tay wished Singapore a happy 56th birthday with a video shoutout. Accompanying her post is a series of photos and videos, including one where she held a full-sized Singapore flag while out cycling.
Kumar
To celebrate the nation’s birthday, local comedian Kumar posted a video of veteran local singer-songwriter Ramli Sarip’s new rendition of “Majulah Singapura”. In addition, a music video was created to show iconic Singapore locations, including Jewel Changi, Marina Bay Sands, and Flyer. Kumar also wrote in his caption, “One Nation, One Vision, One Identity…No nation is perfect; it has to be made so. Happy National Day Singapore!”
Fann Wong
National Day will always be a double celebration in Fann Wong and Christopher Lee’s household, with their son Zed Lee’s birthday falling on 9th August as well. Accompanying the celebration is a massive coastal village cake to mark their son’s seventh birthday. Although Lee is out of town, Wong’s editing skills ensured that he is in the family portrait in her Instagram post.
Shabir
Winner of the inaugural singing competition Vasantham Star 2005, local singer-songwriter Shabir dedicated a national day song medley on his Instagram to celebrate the nation’s birthday. What is even more impressive is that Shabir chose to sing the songs in four different languages, including “Singai Naadu”, “The Road Ahead”, “Xiao Ren Wu De Xin Sheng”, and “Rasa Sayang”.
Taufik Batisah
Singapore Idol Taufik Batisah shared a post of his 2005’s performance at the National Day Parade when he performed a duet with Rui En on the song “Reach Out for the Skies.” He also captioned the video with the message: “Throwback to the good ol’ days. Anyone remembers this song?”
The 39-year-old singer definitely does not have to worry as fans flocked to his post, leaving comments such as “My all-time fave NDP song”, “The GOAT”, and “recreate this!” Deejay Joakim also joined in and commented, “Manifest this brother. 20th anniversary is in 4 years. NDP2025.”
Rui En
While she is new to Instagram, local actress Rui En recalled when she was in New York, meeting a Singaporean who was based in the States, on her trip: “I offered to sing the National Anthem right there in Newark Airport for her (nobody knows me there, can sing very loud)." She said, 'Please don’t, I’ll cry.' She was already tearing. Then she said, 'Singapore will always be the best,'” she wrote, sharing the touching encounter.
Fellow actress Chantelle Ng chimed in, commenting, “Happy National Day, sis. Please sing the national anthem for us; I’ll tear up too.”
Suhaimi Yusof
Local comedian and actor Suhaimi Yusof performed for Punggol Coast CCC at a virtual event and uploaded his segment onto his Instagram, sharing that he “might as well extend part of it to all Singaporeans here & overseas.” Dressed in the nation’s iconic red and white, the 51-year-old belted “We Will Get There” while standing in front of a virtual backdrop showcasing the Singapore skyline, past NDP participants, and even photos of kampungs from the past.
