Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) announced on Twitter that he has tested positive for COVID-19 after experiencing mild symptoms. The Republican lawmaker credited the vaccine he received for making his case manageable.

“I was just informed by the House physician I have tested positive for #COVID19 even after being vaccinated,” Graham wrote in a tweet posted Monday, August 2. “I started having flu-like symptoms Saturday night and went to the doctor this morning.”

“I feel like I have a sinus infection and at present time I have mild symptoms,” he continued, sharing his plan to quarantine for 10 days before adding, “I am very glad I was vaccinated because without vaccination I am certain I would not feel as well as I do now. My symptoms would be far worse.”

Graham was vaccinated in late December, according to a South Carolina ABC affiliate report from the time. After getting the shot, he wrote on Twitter, “Thank God for nurses who help people in need and know how to use a needle. Thank God for those who produced these vaccines. If enough of us take it, we will get back to normal lives. Help is on the way.”

While he found the vaccines praiseworthy, Graham getting the shot wasn’t received positively in all corners. As CNN reported at the time, he was among Republicans lambasted as some members of Congress got their shots before health-care workers. Last October, Graham’s decision not to take a COVID-19 test after being in a room with another GOP senator who had tested positive forced a change in the format for the debate with his Democratic challenger in the 2020 election.

Graham, who turned 66 last month, would be considered at increased risk due to his age were he unvaccinated, according to guidance from the CDC. According to data compiled and published by Axios, Graham is now part of a tiny fraction of a percent of people who have tested positive after being vaccinated in what many refer to as a “breakthrough” infection. An even smaller percentage of people in the U.S. who were vaccinated have been hospitalized or died.
