  • Lili Reinhart posted a picture of her sideboob to Instagram in an attempt to bring attention to Breonna Taylor’s murder.

  • Lili received backlash for the post and apologized, saying it wasn’t her intention to offend anyone.

While we are finally starting to see the beginnings of justice for George Floyd (all officers involved in his murder have been indicted), the cops who killed Breonna Taylor while she was peacefully sleeping inside her home have yet to be arrested. As a result, celebrities and regular folk alike are continuing to sign petitions, bring awareness to her case, and demand that justice is served. This includes Lili Reinhart, who thought showing off some sideboob on Instagram would help put more spotlight on Breonna’s death.

In the since-deleted photo, Lili wrote, “Now that my sideboob has gotten your attention, Breonna Taylor’s murderers have not been arrested. Demand justice.” Lili’s intentions were good, but some people felt it was totally inappropriate to caption a personal pic like this with Breonna’s name.

Following the backlash, Lili went on Twitter to apologize and show that she understood the criticism. She wrote:

“I’ve always tried to use my platform for good. And speak up about things that are important to me. I also can admit when I make a mistake and I made a mistake with my caption. It was never my intent to insult anyone and I’m truly sorry to those that were offended.

“I’ve tried very hard to be honest on my IGTV lives that I’m still learning and trying to be better. But I understand that my caption came off as tone-deaf. I truly had good intentions and did not think it through that it could come off as insensitive.”

This is a misstep, yes, but Lili has been doing the work to amplify Black voices with her platform and bring attention to Black Lives Matter. In this month alone, Lili has hosted 14 IGTV conversations with Black men and women in media to discuss race issues like microaggressions, the lack of diversity in Hollywood, and checking one’s privilege.

Hopefully, Lili can see this as a teachable moment she can reference in the future.
