Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse Break Their Silence on Breakup Reports

Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse have broken their silence on social media after Us Weekly, E!, and People reported earlier this week that the Riverdale off-screen sweethearts had ended their relationship. The two were promoting their W magazine cover together, where they spoke about why they keep their relationship private. The magazine itself did acknowledge the split reports but did not include confirmation from either Reinhart or Sprouse that they officially broke up.

On Instagram, Sprouse and Reinhart called BS on all the tabloid reports.

"BREAKING: A reliable source has confirmed that none of you know shit," Reinhart captioned her shot. Her co-star Camila Mendes responded with a "👏🏽" emoji.

"UNPRECEDENTED: Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart consume the flesh of ‘reliable sources’ to fuel their bacchanalian sex cult," Sprouse captioned his shot of their cover. Reinhart liked it.

Reinhart explained in her W interview that Sprouse was the one who encouraged them to keep things secret. “At first, I didn’t want things private,” Reinhart said. “Now that I’m X amount of years in, I do appreciate the privacy we have, that he’s encouraged me to take. No one knows how long we’ve been together, and no one will until we’re ready to say it. No one knows how we fell in love, except for our close friends and us. It’s really special. If and when we break up on the show, I don’t know,” she said, trailing off. “It’s weird being with an actor. You deal with shit no one has to deal with.”

Sprouse and Reinhart were first reported to be dating in July 2017 after they were seen "canoodling, holding hands and kissing," at Entertainment Weekly's Comic Con party, a source told People at the time. They did not publicly confirm their relationship until the next April 2018, when they were seen kissing in Paris. The two would make their Met Gala debut in May 2018 and attend again together in May 2019. Reinhart made their relationship Instagram official in May 2018:

Reinhart and Sprouse regularly posted tributes to each other on Instagram. One of Reinhart's most personal was her birthday post to him last August. She wrote, "It seems as if the world would still be a stranger to me, if not for you. I’m so thankful that our paths intertwined to form this beautiful adventure~ Happy birthday, my love."

The year before that—months before they'd confirm their romance—she wrote Sprouse a similarly sweet birthday tribute. "To the man who has showed me more beautiful places in this past year than I have ever seen in my whole life," she wrote. "Happy birthday, Cole. Thank you for all of the adventures and here's to many more 🌙"
