Lil Nas X took his horse to Old Town Road and it led him straight to a prestigious country music award.
On Wednesday, Nov. 13, former Teen Vogue cover star Lil Nas X and fellow musician Billy Ray Cyrus won the 2019 Country Music Association Award for Musical Event of the Year for their work on “Old Town Road (Remix).” Lil Nas X made history with this win by becoming the first hip-hop artist to ever win this award.
Lil Nas X is also the first Black, openly gay man to win this country music award.
His historic win has been lauded by his fans, especially after the controversy that surrounded the song’s release earlier this year regarding what genre the song fit into. Author Angie Thomas tweeted “A gay Black man won. I love to see it. Seethe, bigots. Seethe.” Another fan, Bianca Webber, tweeted “Lil Nas X went from getting kicked off the country charts to winning a CMA Award. What a glow up.”
“Old Town Road (Remix)” is arguably the most popular song of 2019, having spent a record-breaking 19 weeks atop Billboard’s Top 100 list. Since the remix’s release in April, the song has won multiple awards, including MTV’s Video Music Award for Song of the Year, BET Hip-Hop Award for Best Single of the Year, and Teen Choice Award for Choice R&B/Hip-Hop Song, to name a few.
With this CMA win, Lil Nas X joins the likes of country music greats like Dolly Parton, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire, and Willy Nelson. This was the first win in this category for both Lil Nas X and Billy Ray.
Lil Nas X’s debut EP “7” is currently available, with his second single “Panini” playing on radios and Spotify playlists everywhere.
