This Light Therapy Mask Is One of Dermstore’s Best-Selling Skincare Products

It’s 2020, and if you’re not including futuristic skincare tools in your beauty regimen, you’re missing out. According to Dermstore’s ranking of its best-selling products (and a slew of celebrities), it’s time to give light therapy a try.

Case in point: The SpectraLite FaceWare Pro from Dr. Dennis Gross (a dermatologist whose name is constantly rolling off the tongues of Hollywood A-listers like Olivia Palermo, Zoe Kravitz, and Selena Gomez) was one of Dermstore’s best-selling products in 2019. While at first glance it may look like something out of an ‘80s scary movie, the light therapy device isn’t as horrifying as it appears, and celebs like Jessica Alba and Chrissy Teigen have been using similar masks for years.

LED light therapy masks, including the SpectraLite FaceWare Pro, use red lights to stimulate collagen production and reduce inflammation, and use blue lights to kill acne-causing bacteria and precancerous cells, Miami-based board-certified dermatologist Dr. Loretta Ciraldo, MD, FAAD explains. This one features 162 lights (100 red and 62 blue), and it works by simply exposing your skin to the LED lights for a few minutes at a time.

For best results, you’ll want to use the mask after giving your skin a quick cleanse. Then, secure it to your face with the attached strap and select your preferred light setting. The lights will be activated for three minutes before automatically turning off, and when you’re done you can finish your treatment off with a bit of serum and moisturizer.

At $435 a pop, the mask is quite the investment. But is it worth it? According to Dr. Ciraldo, at-home treatments are generally not as effective as what you can get out of an appointment with a professional, but they can be a good option for those who aren’t able to see a dermatologist regularly. Plus, the masks are a one-time investment rather than a recurring cost as with in-office treatments, which can be up to hundreds for a single session depending on where you go. However, at this price point, Dr. Ciraldo recommends consulting with your derm before taking the pricey plunge to confirm that this will be effective for your skin.

Dermstore shoppers say the Dr. Dennis Gross mask is easy to use and delivers results. “[It] really helps with calming and preventing acne, as well as diminishing fine lines and wrinkles with daily use,” one reviewer wrote. Another said they saw a difference in their skin after using the mask for just three weeks. “I am 33 years old and have been struggling with cystic acne for well over 10 years… This device has made a huge and positive impact… My face looks clearer and brighter.”

The FDA-cleared anti-aging skincare tool is designed to smooth wrinkles and banish acne, while evening skin tone and texture. It’s ideal for those fighting blemishes or who want to take preventative care of their skin, but Dr. Ciraldo suggests consulting with your dermatologist or a skin specialist before adding a device like this into your regular skincare regimen, especially if you are prone to seizures, have light sensitivity-related health issues, or are taking a medicine that can make you light sensitive, like retinoids or antibiotics in the Tetracycline family.
