Legendary NBA star Scottie Pippen teamed up with renowned bladesmith Bob Kramer to design a knife that supports the Black Lives Matter movement. Proceeds from the auction of this knife will benefit Color of Change, a civil rights advocacy organization.
Scottie is known for his six NBA championship titles with the Chicago Bulls, and Kramer is famous for his blade work. The pair collaborated on a knife design that is inspired by clasped hands but has even more symbolism when you get up close.
"A close look at the underlying pattern on the knife we are auctioning reveals an important message. Clasped hands weave through the blade. Upon first glance you might just see the hands of black and white," Kramer explained in a press release: "But a closer look shows hands of diamond and circular Damascus that are part of the pattern which represents the undercurrent of systemic racism that has always existed, though not easily seen or acknowledged."
Kramer shared a zoomed in video showing the detail of the finished knife (which is only available through online auction on his site). He showed a side-by-side of the original design concept sketch next to the finished product, which features meticulous detail from the handle all the way to the tip of the knife.
We are very flattered to announce the endorsement/partnership with @scottiepippen. Through our mutual appreciation of knives and our commitment to bring awareness to social injustice and fight racism Mr Pippen and I have decided to bring as much attention to this auction as we can.Auction is live now and runs to Monday July 20, 2020. 100% of the auction will go to BLM @colorofchange support. This is our response to the question “What can we do to help?” Combining the unique talents of each member of our team over the last month, this requires you to stop and look a little deeper at the underlying pattern. Clasped hands weave through the blade. Upon first glimpse you might just see the hands of black and white. Look closer. The hands of diamond and circular Damascus are part of the pattern representing the under current of systemic racism that’s been there since the beginning, but not easily seen or acknowledged. Let us all stand together as one people. Peace ✌️🙏#scottiepippen @colorofchange
