The legacy Tom Brady leaves behind in New England

Yahoo Sports’ own Dan Wetzel reflects back on the remarkable career of Brady and his time in a Patriots' uniform.

Video Transcript

DAN WETZEL: Tom Brady, the New England Patriots-- for two decades, they were nearly synonymous-- an overlooked late-round draft pick, a once forlorn NFL franchise. Together, they changed the game Super Bowl after Super Bowl after Super Bowl.

Now it ends on a St. Patrick's Day in Boston that was already devoid of festivities. Brady announcing his football journey will take him somewhere else. Where is still to be sorted out.

This chapter is closed though, and it is as glorious of a story as the NFL has ever told. He won from the start. He won until the end. In the middle, some of the most historic games, rivalries, comebacks, and even defeats.

Brady to Moss. Brady to Edelman. Brady to Gronk. Tom Brady, TB12 in New England. Along with Coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots became the NFL's unstoppable machine, two very different men sharing a singular goal, winning-- 17 AFC East crowns, nine Super Bowl appearances, six Lombardi trophies.

The end is rarely pretty. Brady had outlasted normal career arcs. No matter who wanted what, it was time to move on. So out the door goes this New England icon, future uncertain, but a past that will live forever in Foxborough.
