Lee soccer scores two straight victories

Mar. 22—Lee County soccer bookended the weekend with road victories on Friday and Monday, downing Hoke 5-0 in a conference game and then coming back after the break with a 9-1 rout of Western Harnett on Monday.

The two wins snapped a four-game winless skid for the Lady Jackets, who have embarked on a challenging early-season slate of games outside of Sandhills Athletic Conference play. However, Lee (3-4-1, 1-1 SAC) had also lost an overtime match at Union Pines last week, and so Friday's match at Hoke was important in the conference race.

Lee responded well, jumping on a struggling Lady Bucks team for three first-half goals and cruising to the win behind a hat trick from Gillian Garrison and a shutout in goal from Diana Torres, who had three saves.

Lily Currin and Ava Baldwin also had goals for the Lady Jackets, while two assists were credited to Currin and one each to Garrison, Lila Moshfegh, and Gracie Currin.

The team was confident in its return visit to former conference rival Western Harnett, having already blanked them 5-0 in the first meeting 17 days prior, but Western did manage to score once in the rematch. However, Lee wasn't having any of a possible upset, finding the back of the net five times in the first half and then adding four more after the break. Garrison had a hat trick plus one more, and two assists as well. Moshfegh scored twice and assisted twice. Kenzy Martinez, Nevaeh Williams and Ava Baldwin all scored one goal each, while Analy Centeno, Nataly Lopez, Currin, Alyssandra Meza, and Addisyn Allen also had assists.

Torres was credited with two saves in the win.

In conference play, most teams have just started playing SAC games in the past week. Scotland is 2-0 in league games, followed by Union Pines and Pinecrest at 1-0, Lee and Richmond at 1-1, with Southern Lee and Hoke still seeking their first conference wins.

Lee returns home for a 6 p.m. match with Terry Sanford tonight. They return to conference play on Thursday with a home match against Pinecrest.
