“Won’t last a season.” “Roseanne without Roseanne will never work.” Yahoo readers are reacting to ABC’s announcement that the show Roseanne will move on without its main star, Roseanne Barr.
Barr faced severe fallout after a racist tweet she posted in May, attacking former President Barack Obama’s close adviser Valerie Jarrett. In the post, which has since been deleted, the comedian referred to Jarrett as the offspring of the “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes.” Barr issued an apology, but it was too little, too late. She was removed from the Roseanne reboot, and the show was abruptly canceled.
Last week, ABC revealed that The Conners, a spinoff starring original cast members John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, and Michael Fishman, would air in the fall.
Thousands of Yahoo readers have expressed their feelings, with a majority saying that Barr will be missed. “Not the same without Roseanne. I won’t be watching,” wrote one commenter. Another said, “The show was Roseanne, the others were in her orbit.”
In a podcast interview with her longtime friend Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, her first since the controversial tweet, Barr, 65, was very emotional. “What can I do now except say of course, I’m not a racist, I’m an idiot,” she said. “I said to God, ‘I am willing to accept whatever consequences this brings because I know I’ve done wrong. I’m going to accept what the consequences are,’ and I do, and I have,’” Barr went on to say.
.@ErielleReshef of @GMA on @ABCNetwork was, I believe, very fair to @therealroseanne today in reporting on her podcast "Teshuva" – repentance. America has to learn to forgive to those who undergo real contrition, remorse, and repentance. https://t.co/ssiS1dxZid

The 10-episode Conner family spinoff will air this fall. In a statement issued by the show’s producer, Barr said she agreed to the settlement to save the jobs of 200 cast and crew members. She will have no financial or creative involvement in the new show.
