In this episode of In The Know: Hair School, celebrity hairstylist and host Justine Marjan shows us how to achieve the perfect Dutch braid, sharing her favorite tips, tools and products.

The first step in doing a Dutch braid is creating a center part in the hair, and taking the part all the way down to the bottom of the neck. One the hair has been parted, Marjan uses a Conair Metal Styling Clip, to clip away one side of the hair. Then, she moves onto the unclipped part, and begins braiding the hair.

“To do this braid you’ll want to start with about a triangular section at the front hairline, right to the side of the center part,” explains Marjan. Marjan then separates the triangular section into three parts, and does a reverse braid, by crossing the side pieces underneath the center piece, adding hair from the side each time she crosses under the center.

“I just continue down the length of her hair, with a regular three-strain braid,” says Marjan. After completing one side, Marjan braids the other half of the model’s hair, and the Dutch braids are complete! Now that the braids are ready, there are a couple of styling routes you can take.

“So you can absolutely leave the braids like this, especially if you worked in a hair mask or a styling treatment into the hair,” says Marjan. However, if you want a more “organic or fuller finish to the hair,” you can carefully pull apart the sides of the braids, according to Marjan.

“If you want something clean, leave it as is, or if you want something more ethereal, go ahead and pull apart the sides,” sums up the stylist.

As a finishing touch, Marjan grabs a Reach Clean World Bamboo Soft Toothbrush, and sprays a touch of TRESemmé Tres Two Extra Hold Aerosol Hairspray onto the brush. She then works the toothbrush through the model’s hair, brushing down any flyaways.

“Because we pulled out the braid, I’m totally fine with a little bit of frizz or flyaways, but I do want it to be really clean around her face,” says Marjan, as she continues to work through the model’s hair with the toothbrush.

Doing Dutch braids can be tricky, but thanks to Marjan’s step-by-step tutorial, you can start braiding like a pro in no time!
