LaVar Ball founded the NBA, at least according to a Google glitch
LaVar Ball is happy to tell you of his litany of achievements in astonishing, grandiose fashion, which makes it a little surprising he’s never mentioned that he actually founded the NBA.
Yet for a brief time on Tuesday morning, if you entered “NBA founder” into Google, Ball’s photo and bio popped up:
Obviously, this was the fault of a janky algorithm somewhere along the line. The league that became the NBA was founded by a consortium of arena owners in the mid-1940s, and took on the familiar “NBA” name after a merger with a competing league. This was about two decades before Ball was born, though a small matter of logic like that hasn’t appeared to slow down Ball’s self-mythologizing before.
“Clearly we dropped the ball,” Google said in a statement. “We’re taking a timeout to huddle around the issue and expect to rebound soon.”
Ball, of course, is the founder of Big Baller Brand and the co-creator of Lonzo, LiAngelo and LaMelo Ball. Lonzo is in his rookie year with the Lakers, and LiAngelo and LaMelo recently accepted deals to play professionally in Lithuania. Ball himself has also announced plans to create a league designed for high school players with pro potential to prep themselves for the league. Ball may not have founded the NBA, but after the 2017 he had, he lives rent-free in the head of pretty much everyone who watches basketball.
