If there’s any celeb we would expect to take, say, a global pandemic in stride and remain unruffled as she quarantines in style, gardening and smoothie-making with her kids, it’s the always-poised working mom Lauren Conrad. And lo and behold, Conrad is meeting those expectations and exceeding them; this designer/actor/entrepreneur/lifestyle icon is even taking this moment to launch her first line of kids clothing, Kohl’s Little Co. by Lauren Conrad, this week.

Take that, 2020! Conrad will not be glummed up by your glumness! Instead, she will bring good cheer, cute-as-a button designs, and beachy-chic Califorina-cool colors to kids’ closets everywhere. We, for one, are pretty thrilled.

Conrad’s children’s collection caters to baby (newborn to 24 months) as well as toddler (2T-5T) sizes; it’s gender-neutral with a heavy emphasis on mix-and-match, multipurpose items from rompers and bodysuits to dresses and tees. The pieces retail from $14 to $20 and are available today on Kohl’s.com, with an exclusive launch on May 26.

We caught up with Conrad to get the insider info on her new line — from its mood-board colors to its sustainable fabrics — as well as more products and processes she uses to keep her sons Charlie Wolf and Liam James (plus herself) healthy and ever-so-stylish.

The non-screen activity that keeps my kids occupied for hours

“We have been gardening together. My older son mostly plays in the dirt, but he gets very excited when things begin to grow. He likes to go check the garden every day and see if there is anything he can eat.”

The TV shows I actually enjoy watching with my kids

“We watch Sesame Street together. We prefer the older episodes because the graphics are a bit more mellow.”

The books my kids are currently

“It changes weekly, but he has always loved Dr. Seuss books.”

The snack hack I use with my kids

“Honestly, my older son is a pretty healthy eater and loves fruit and veggies. So we always have bowls of oranges and apples for snacking. He also likes nuts so I always keep raw cashews on hand… [And] smoothies. We make Liam a vegetable smoothie every morning to make sure he is starting out with a good meal.”

The inspiration behind my baby and kids apparel collection at Kohl’s

“I’ve wanted to design a kids’ line for a while now, but I wanted to make sure that I had enough experience shopping for kids clothes before I did so. We have been working on the Little Co. by Lauren Conrad brand for a long time, and while this isn’t the ideal time to launch a brand, I hope this collection will be helpful for families. From my own experience, my kids keep growing and they tend to have several outfit changes a day, so I know how important affordable apparel is. Everything in this collection retails for under $20! … Several playful pieces could easily be mixed-and-matched, as well as made from 100% organic cotton — and by partnering with Kohl’s, we made it accessible to everyone.”

What my design mood board looks like

“When we were looking at color schemes for the line, we wanted everything to have sort of a beachy, coastal feel. Very true to California. The colors all feel very natural and colorful without being too loud.”

My favorite materials to use

“Sustainability was really important when developing this line. The garments are made with 100% organic cotton and the hang-tags are made using recycled materials.”

What I dress my own kids in

“My Kohl’s Little Co. by Lauren Conrad collection is all about pieces that can be mixed-and-matched that all have a similar color story, so you can get a lot of different combinations out of pieces. Anyone who’s wrestled a two-year-old into an outfit and realizes it doesn’t match, knows that it’s nice if you have lots of pieces that coordinate together.”

What’s keeps my mom wardrobe on point

“As a mom of two, I am pretty busy and honestly, it gets messy! I need to be in an outfit that is easy to move around in and easy to clean. I love the lightweight tops and high-waisted denim staples in my Kohl’s LC Lauren Conrad collection; they are comfortable and flattering, which is perfect for my mom wardrobe.”
