The Latest 80s Revival? 'Never Let Me Down Again.'HBO

Thanks to HBO’s new series, The Last of Us, we have a new deep-cut from the '80s to obsess over. Depeche Mode’s 1987 hit, “Never Let Me Down Again,” was featured in the pilot episode—and now, it’s climbing the charts once again. It’s a bit early to tell, but it sounds like “Never Let Me Down Again” could be the next “Goo Goo Muck.” (Which was itself the next "Running Up That Hill.")

According to Billboard, the song is on track to continue the music world's '80s takeover. “Never Let Me Down Again” reportedly tripled its streams overnight, going from 26,000 streams when The Last of Us premiered, to 83,000 the next day. Depeche Mode caught wind of the revival, aided fans' interest by adding “Heard on Episode 1 of The Last of Us,” to the song’s description on YouTube.

For those who don’t know, The Last of Us is HBO’s latest wunderkind. The dystopian drama is based on the best-selling video game of the same name. The Last of Us takes place after a brutal pandemic destroys the world. The show follows Joel, a disgruntled survivor tasked with bringing a young girl named Ellie to a mysterious destination. Together, they have to battle ruthless conditions and dangerous killers in order to survive the trek.

The first episode of The Last of Us premiered on Sunday, January 15. “Never Let Me Down Again,” played in the final scene. The ominous shot features an old-fashioned radio playing the tune before the camera cuts to black. Might the track signal some kind of code for a group of survivors who are somehow in touch with Joel?

While we don’t know what message the TV series was trying to send, it’s safe to assume Joel and Ellie will meet some new characters soon. If you want in on the action, you can stream the pilot on HBO Max. New episodes will release every Sunday night at 9 P.M., until the season finale on March 13.
