Nearly a century after All Quiet on the Western Front won Best Picture at the 3rd annual Academy Awards, another adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's novel is hoping to win the top prize again.

Both the 1930 and 2022 film were adapted from Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front, a 1929 novel about the horrors of World War I, told from the perspective of a German soldier.

The 1930 film was up for four awards, winning Oscars for Outstanding Production (a precursor to Best Picture) and Best Director. At the 2023 Academy Awards, the Netflix version is up for nine awards, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film.

The big question of the evening: Can All Quiet on the Western Front repeat the Best Picture win?

It would be the first time two films adapted from the same source material would take home the trophy. Actors playing the same character have won Oscars in different years—when Marlon Brando won for paying Vito Corleone, and then two years later, Robert De Niro won for his take on a younger version of Vito. Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix also both won Oscars, for playing the Joker in The Dark Night and Joker, respecitively. Last year, Ariana DeBose won for her portrayal of Anita in West Side Story, a role that earned Rita Moreno an Oscar 60 years prior.
