Lancaster County artist doing live painting at U.S. Women’s Open highlighting women’s health

LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) — If you attend the U.S. Women’s Open at the Lancaster Country Club this weekend, you might see a woman wearing paint-splattered overalls happily painting on a large canvas.

Susan Gottlieb, Ephrata, was asked by Penn Medicine to complete a painting live at the U.S. Women’s Open highlighting women’s health and wellness.

“I am just so thrilled that there is such a focus right now on women’s health,” said Gottlieb. “It’s extremely important. I think in this setting, everyone is happy and grateful and excited to be here and they see the art piece which is very bright and colorful and that to me is almost a reflection of the energy of this tournament.”

Gottlieb said the painting will be completed by the end of the tournament and will hang at Women & Babies Hospital in Lancaster when complete.

“This is an opportunity to talk about women in sports and how it’s drawn so much interest right now and produce something that will hang at the hospital,” Gottlieb said.

Gottlieb started by painting an aerial view of the golf course and placing a giant heart on top of it. She is a mixed-media painter and wanted to include a collage element in the painting, which is where the fans at the U.S. Women’s Open come in.

Inside the Wellness Pavilion, which is where Gottlieb is painting, there are prompts in the back asking people to write words they think relate to strong women and health and wellness.

Some of the responses have included “Be you, be fun”, “Hear me roar” and the Maya Angelou quote “Still I rise.”

“I’m embedding some of their answers,” Gottlieb said. “So it’s sort of a community effort in a way.”

Gottlieb has been involved in the Lancaster art scene for a long time. She grew up in Ephrata and completed her undergraduate education at Millersville. She did her MFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art while teaching at Donegal High School.

She then began working at universities like the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design and Lebanon Valley. Gottlieb later transitioned to working at private high schools.

Gottlieb completed her career by starting the Stone Independent School in Lancaster with some of her colleagues. The school is for 7th-12th grade and is completely project-based.

Now, Gottlieb mainly does shows at the Red Raven Art Gallery. However, this is not the first time she has created artwork for a Lancaster medical center. Gottlieb previously made a painting for Lancaster General Hospital after COVID-19 thanking healthcare workers.

“I can’t tell you the number of times people have come out of the hospital or out of an office. . . and said ‘I sat there with your art in front of me the whole time and it made me so happy’,” Gottlieb said. “I love that.”

Gottlieb is enjoying doing this painting live because she’s been able to highlight Lancaster’s huge art scene for those in attendance while also introducing people to the creative process.

“The more we can engage people in art, they realize they’re not separate from it,” Gottlieb said. “Here, I can talk to people about how the painting is developing. Then they’re not estranged from it and it enriches them and it does certainly me too.”

Gottlieb wants her piece to celebrate the importance of women in the community, how they are making waves and the importance of female health.

“Women’s health and wellness is a priority for me and I believe we must be responsible for our own health and wellness and have the freedom to do so,” Gottlieb said.
