Lana Del Rey Wore That Mesh Mask in Her New Music Video, and People Aren’t Happy

In October 2020, Lana Del Rey drew criticism for wearing a sparkly mesh face mask to a crowded fan event in Los Angeles, when coronavirus case numbers were on the rise. She defended the accessory on Twitter, writing, “The mask had plastic on the inside. They’re commonly sewn in by stylists these days. I don’t generally respond to articles because I don’t care. But there ya go. Same goes for everyone’s masks in my video. I’m lucky enough to have a team of people who can do that.”

The “video” she's talking about is probably for her song “Chemtrails Over the Country Club,"”which she dropped in early January. And yes, in the video she's wearing the same mesh mask. (Production for the video seemed to happen before October's mask-gate controversy.)

In the retro-style video, Del Rey drives, applies makeup, and accessorizes her outfit with pearls and the mask.

It's worth noting this is a music video, not real life. Even still, fans are not happy with the choice, and they're taking to social media to express their thoughts:

This isn't the first controversy Lana Del Rey's had to deal with this week. When revealing the cover of her upcoming album on Instagram, she included a lengthy comment addressing the racial makeup of the women in the group picture. Lines like, “My best friends are rappers my boyfriends have been rappers” made the internet cringe, and rightfully so.

“My dearest friends have been from all over the place, so before you make comments again about a WOC/POC issue, I’m not the one storming the capital [sic],” she wrote. “I’m literally changing the world by putting my life and thoughts and love out there on the table 24 seven. Respect it.”

This was perhaps an attempt to get ahead of an ongoing issue some have with the way Del Rey's spoken about women of color in the music industry. But her comments defending the cover only caused more internet chatter.
