Lady Gaga Continues Ariana Grande's "Stool Challenge" In New Photos

Queens of perching on stools.

In October 2017, we were wondering how Ariana Grande defied the laws of physics on the cover of her My Everything album. Now, Lady Gaga’s Variety cover story has reignited the debate about how chairs work.

On Nov. 14, Variety unveiled its new issue with the A Star Is Born singer and actor, and the Internet is focusing on the visuals. Particularly, on a series of snapshots that show Gaga in an array of gravity-defying poses on a stool, which have lead some people to compare the shoot to Ari’s old album cover where she too is perched on a black stool.

“Come for the revealing portrait of a deeply private pop icon. Stay for pictures of Lady Gaga balancing on a stool in suede knee-high boots with stiletto,” Variety’s own Film & Media Executive Editor wrote when sharing the story on Twitter. Per Variety, the pictures in question were taken in Gaga’s home in Malibu, just a week before she was forced to evacuate due to the recent California wildfires. In the pics, she’s wearing a shirt Bradley Cooper sports in multiple scenes of A Star Is Born whilst she "balances on a wobbly stool."

And it certainly doesn’t look wobbly to us, proving the task even harder. “Remember when everyone freaked out about how Ariana Grande sat on that stool for her My Everything album cover? Well GET ready for Lady Gaga,” one Twitter user wrote in response to the pictures. “Seems like lady gaga is doing the chair challenge,” another one added. The photos certainly have a reminiscent allure to Ari’s so it’s no surprise people are likening the two.

The “Ariana Grandeing” challenge, as it was dubbed, took over the Internet on Oct. 2017 when Twitter user Jesse McLaren attempted to find out how the “Thank u, next” singer managed to pull off such pose. To this day, the mystery of the stool maneuver still remains, with Ariana further fueling the secret with her cryptic response at the time.

Regardless of whether Gaga was challenging her inner Ariana, one thing is for sure: she would have lit up the challenge had she taken part a year ago. As one Twitter fan pointed out: "In this house we Stan stools."
