While many took umbrage to Kylie Jenner’s controversial Interview magazine photo shoot — which featured the 18-year-old reality star sitting in a gilded wheelchair — photographer Jennifer Rovero admits she felt indifferent.

But that soon changed, when she heard the real reason so many people were offended. “It wasn’t until we were taking my kids to school that we heard on the radio the reactions, and something stood out: One of the hosts said, ‘It’s because we don’t have any models to use in the first place’ as it was a fashion shoot,“ she tells E!.

The revelation inspired her to grab her camera. “That’s when we decided to re-create this moment and show a real fashion model.”

Luckily, Rovero knew the perfect person for the job: her girlfriend Lauren Wasser, a model who lost her right leg to the rare yet deadly toxic shock syndrome in 2012.

Wearing a black bobbed wig and her golden prosthetic leg, Wasser posed like Jenner in a similar chair, though Rovero’s version includes mounds of tabloid magazines at her model’s feet — no doubt in reference to Jenner’s fame and incessant coverage by the media.

"We weren’t coming from a negative place but rather, ‘Oh wait, let’s show real life,’ because this is our reality,” Rovero says. “We wanted to create a conversation, as we are trying to change how beauty is defined.”
