Kroger’s New App Lets You Pay By Phone
This week, Kroger launched the Kroger Pay app, which provides shoppers with a way to streamline the conventional checkout experience by paying for groceries via their smartphone, according to a press release. The app will store your loyalty membership information as well as your debit or credit card, allowing you to also clip coupons digitally that will automatically be applied to your bill.
Kroger execs say that the app is safe, secure, and will be accessible to any shopper in their stores. According to the company’s site, getting started on the new app is as easy as downloading it, importing payment information, and creating a pin, which generates a unique QR code to be scanned at checkout. You'll not only be able to use digital coupons, but the code will also earn you personalized offers and points. The app is available for use at both self-checkout kiosks and traditional checkout lanes.
"Kroger Pay is one of the few mobile wallets that pairs loyalty and payment," said Mary Ellen Adcock, group vice president of operations, in the press release. "The application of this exciting technology is another step in our front-end experience transformation."
Kroger Pay is currently testing the app in its Columbus, Ohio division, and has plans to roll the program out to 10 other markets in the coming months. If everything goes according to plan, it could be in place at all Kroger stores by the end of the year.
The company has also announced a new Kroger Rewards debit card, which connects directly to a customer’s existing checking account, and offers additional rewards and savings. This card can also link with Kroger Pay, allowing shoppers to earn fuel rewards points and pay for groceries with a single scan.

"Through Restock Kroger, we are lowering operating costs, and our new debit card is another way we are doing just that while also rewarding customers who use it."
If you routinely shop at Kroger, you'll see the new debit card in stores before you see Kroger Pay—the retailer says the debit card will be available nationwide later this spring.
