Last year’s Emmy Awards were basically dedicated to Ted Lasso and The Crown, but this year, you won’t hear the latter title called at all, and you probably won’t see many of the cast members either.

Allow me to break this all down for you: The Crown wasn’t on the nominees list this year because only shows that aired between June 1, 2021 and May 31, 2022 are eligible for nominations. Season 5 of The Crown will premiere on Netflix in November, so clearly, it missed the deadline for the 2022 awards.

The last season of the show debuted on the streamer on November 15, 2020, making it eligible for the 2021 awards, which the cast pretty much swept. Members of the show were nominated for a whopping 24 awards and took home a total of 11 trophies. They won hardware for some of the most coveted categories, including Best Drama Series, Best Actress (Olivia Colman), Best Actor (Josh O’Connor), Best Supporting Actress (Gillian Anderson), and Best Supporting Actor (Tobias Menzies).

Sure, season 5 of The Crown is bringing in new cast members, but fans were still hoping to see some of the show’s stars tonight at the Emmys. Unfortunately, Emma Corrin, who joined The Crown cast in season 4 to play Princess Diana and won’t return in season 5 (Elizabeth Debicki has taken on the role), is currently at the Toronto International Film Festival, where her latest film My Policeman, costarring Harry Styles and David Dawson, premiered last night.

After Queen Elizabeth II passed away at 96 years old last week, season 5 of The Crown paused filming “as a mark of respect,” reported Deadline. Filming will also be suspended on the day of Her Majesty The Queen’s funeral,” said the Netflix source to the outlet. Peter Morgan, creator of the show and a writer for it, told Deadline in an email, “The Crown is a love letter” to Queen Elizabeth and he has “nothing to add...just silence and respect.”
