Rotoworld's Ryan Knaus highlights Giannis Antetokounmpo's fantasy outlook as the NBA season begins, explaining why he Is a top-5 option in any fantasy format.
RYAN KNAUS: The 2020-'21 NBA season can already be considered a success for Bucks fans and the organization itself. Why? Because Giannis Antetokounmpo has agreed to a five-year max extension, the largest deal ever in NBA history. So huge for the organization, for a small market team to lock up the back-to-back MVP and a superstar, not only in reality, but also in fantasy.
Giannis comes in as the number 2 player in default Yahoo points leagues last year. The only guy ahead of him was James Harden, who averaged almost 37 minutes per game. Giannis averages 32.
Now, that allows him to stay healthy. It allows him to avoid DNPs, unnecessary rest days. So the low minutes don't necessarily constitute a bad thing. So for fantasy purposes, you just love his permanent upside. You love the fact that he's a walking double-double, a triple-double threat every time he takes the court.
You know you're going to get elite defensive stats. He's an all-around star. If he adds a 3-pointer, forget it. But we haven't seen that yet, so let's not get ahead of ourselves.
The only real asterisk is that, of course, Giannis has terrible high-volume free-throw percentage. So you may need to work at a punt build if you draft him in an eight cat or nine cat league. But he's a number 1 target in points leagues. He's a top-5 guy in any fantasy format. You know what you're getting with the Greek Freak.
