The countdown is officially on, because Kit Kat will soon come in a vegan variety. The catch? For the time being, it’ll be available in the United Kingdom — however, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get excited. Hear us out.

Nestlé owns the Kit Kat brand in the U.K., unlike in the U.S., where it’s a Hershey’s product. The vegan Kit Kat bars, which are called KitKat V, will be launching in several countries around the world where Nestlé owns the brand.

KitKat V is certified vegan and made from 100% sustainable cocoa sourced through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan in conjunction with the Rainforest Alliance, as described in a press release. The goal was to create a chocolate bar that tastes similar to the original Kit Kat, minus the ingredients that are derived from animals. A Bloomberg report says that the vegan milk chocolate has a rice base to substitute for milk.

“Taste was a key factor when developing the plant-based chocolate for our new vegan KitKat. We used our expertise in ingredients, together with a test and learn approach, to create a delicious vegan alternative to our original chocolate KitKat,” Louise Barrett, head of the Nestlé confectionary product technology center, said in a press release.

As far as timing goes, all we know is that the vegan Kit Kat bars will hit shelves in 2021. For those of us in the U.S. who are dying to get their hands on it, we can only hope that KitKat V does so well in other countries that Hershey’s has no choice but to pick it up from Nestlé.
