What a wonderful birthday surprise. While Kirk Douglas celebrated his 103rd birthday today, his son, Michael Douglas, earned a Golden Globe nomination for best actor in a TV series musical or comedy for his portrayal of Sandy Kominsky in The Kominsky Method. While he took home the Golden Globe for that category in 2018, this year, he’s up against Bill Hader (Barry), Ben Platt (The Politician), Paul Rudd (Living with Yourself), and Ramy Youssef (Ramy).

And although the actor was pleasantly surprised by the nomination, he appeared to be even more thrilled that his father was around to share in the exciting news. “12.9.2019 what a great day!” he wrote on Instagram. “Thank you to the HFPA for the @GoldenGlobes nomination, and for making my Dad proud on his 103rd birthday! #TheKominskyMethod.”

Earlier in the day, Michael shared a birthday tribute for Kirk, in which he referred to him as a “living legend.”

“Happy birthday Dad! You are a living legend and your entire family sends you all the love in their hearts! #KirkDouglas #103,” he wrote.

But even though there’s plenty to celebrate today, the famous family may just end up sharing a low-key dinner together. Michael appeared on The Jimmy Kimmel show back in November and revealed that his father is tired of the over-the-top parties that have been thrown in his honor over the years.

“So he’s begging me, he’s got tears down his eyes. ‘Let’s just have dinner, the family together. Bring the kids,'” he said with a laugh.
