Queen Elizabeth's seven-decade reign saw 15 different prime ministers, and now just one day after the death of his mother, King Charles III has met with his first: Liz Truss.

"It's very kind of you to come in. I know how you've been busy, to say the least," King Charles said, per People. "It has been so touching this afternoon when we arrived, all those people who had come to give their condolences ... and flowers," he continued.

The pair had their first formal meeting just ahead of King Charles's first speech as monarch, in which he bestowed the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales upon Prince William and his wife Catherine. He also spoke fondly of his late mother, calling her his "darling Mama" while also praising her lifelong duty to her role and promising to follow in her example of "lifelong service."

"Throughout her life, Her Majesty The Queen – my beloved Mother – was an inspiration and example to me and to all my family, and we owe her the most heartfelt debt any family can owe to their mother; for her love, affection, guidance, understanding and example. Queen Elizabeth was a life well lived; a promise with destiny kept and she is mourned most deeply in her passing. That promise of lifelong service I renew to you all today," he said.

Just a few days before her death, Queen Elizabeth's final official engagement was appointing Liz Truss Prime Minister. Following the Queen's death, Truss gave a speech from 10 Downing Street.

"We are all devastated by the news we have just heard from Balmoral. The death of Her Majesty The Queen is a huge shock to the nation and to the world. Queen Elizabeth II was the rock on which modern Britain was built. Our country has grown and flourished under her reign," she said. "Britain is the great country it is today because of her."
