King Charles has issued a formal statement following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth

The Royal Family shared the statement from His Majesty The King just after 2 p.m. EST on Thursday, Sept. 8.

"The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family," he wrote.

"We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world," he continued.

"During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held."

As next in line of succession, King Charles has stepped into the role of Monarch following his mother's passing. According to the Royal Family, his coronation ceremony will take place "as soon as practically possible."

CNN has confirmed that he will rule under the name King Charles III
