King Charles III pelted with eggs on royal visit with Camilla Parker Bowles

A man has been detained by police after seemingly throwing eggs at King Charles III and Camilla Parker Bowles during a visit to York.

A clip circulating on social media shows the monarch being pelted with eggs as he greeted members of the public at Micklegate Bar, the traditional royal entrance into the city. The eggs missed both the King and Queen Consort, and the couple were quickly ushered away from the scene – although in the video, Charles appears entirely unfazed at the ordeal as he continues greeting the crowds.

Eyewitness Kim Oldfield, told the BBC that she had been stood in the doorway of her shop "enjoying" the couple's arrival when she heard "some booing and eggs flying".

"I glanced across, [saw] the police just descended on the barrier and tried to drag this chap over the top," she said. "About five eggs he'd managed to send."

"Camilla sort of flinched a little bit when the booing started but they [police] quelled it really quickly," the witness went on. "Just a shame they spoilt what was a lovely moment."

According to the BBC, the protester was swiftly restrained by police and could be heard shouting: "This country was built on the blood of slaves." In response, other people in the crowd began to chant, "God save the King" and "shame on you" at the protester.

The incident occurred just hours after the fifth season of The Crown – a fictionalised retelling of royal history – landed on Netflix, leading some fans to draw a connection between the two.
