Kim Kardashian clocked up all the social media memes when she rocked up to last week's Met Gala in a full body suit, which completely covered her face.

The black Balenciaga gown had a matching cape, train and mask that completely encased her body and face, leaving just her long ponytail visible.

While the work of her make-up artist Mario Dedivanovic might have been overshadowed thanks to it being hidden under the full-face mask, her hair stylist's handiwork was the one thing that was on full view.

The 75-inch long ponytail poked out of the back of the costume and swept down her back to touch the floor.

While there's no doubt it was a statement look, particularly given it was the only part of the star's hair and makeup look that we could actually see, we're still not quite sure it was worth the eye-watering price her stylist revealed it cost.

Taking part in a Q&A on his Instagram Stories, Chris Appleton, who created the look, was asked by a fan for the price tag of Kardashian's jet-black pony tail.

Though he didn't reveal where it was purchased, he did say the stand-out look cost a whopping $10,000 (approx £7,300).

That's one expensive hair-do.

Sharing a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the reality TV star ahead of the Met Gala, Appleton detailed the process of getting Kardashian Met Gala-ready.

"Prep hair with @colorwowhair dream coat for a high gloss finish. Using cult favorite hairspray apply throughout roots," he wrote.

"Using @leandrolimited scalp care, brush hair into a ponytail. Add extensions for length. Using a @leandrolimited flattening iron with @colorwowhair extra shine spray for a lux finish."

Despite no one being able to see her face, Kardashian still had her glam squad on hand to prepare her for the occasion, with her make-up artist, Mario Dedivanovic, revealing how he created the look underneath the mask.

Dedivanovic revealed he'd used celebrity-favourite moisturiser Crème de la Mer by luxury skincare brand, La Mer to get the star red-carpet ready.

The moisturiser has been a go-to of Kardashian's for years. Back in 2018, she posted her skincare routine on her KKW Beauty website, listing La Mer as one of her skin care secrets.

"I've gotten into such a good routine because I use products that work together and really see results!" she wrote, continuing “there are some that I'll just never give up”.

As well as giving their say on Kardashian's outfit, many social media users also poked fun at the pictures of Kim’s long-time makeup artist for prepping her skin and applying makeup, only for her to cover it up with a mask.

Taking the fun poking with good grace, the make-up artist responded by posting a series of his favourite memes on Instagram, with the caption: “It’s the makeup for me, LOL”.

Kardashian West’s ensemble was designed by Balenciaga's creative director Demna Gvasalia in collaboration with West, according to Vogue.

While the fashion bible claimed Kardashian's look had "rewritten red carpet rules", some fans on social media weren't so sure about the bold ensemble, with some comparing the look to a Dementor from Harry Potter, while others claimed she looked like the Grim Reaper or a wraith from Lord of the Rings.

Other Twitter users wondered if the look had been inspired by the aesthetic estranged husband Kanye West had used for his latest album Donda - an all-black square.

Kardashian had already given a hint at her prospective Met Gala outfit, having arrived in New York a few days before in an all black Balenciaga bodysuit.

The head-to-toe black leather look included a black belted trench, stiletto boots, gloves and a full face mask covering everything but the star's long, dark ponytail dangling from a hole in the back.

Kardashian's Met Gala look was a far cry from her sister Kendall Jenner's, who opted for the ultimate naked dress instead.

One of the most iconic images of the night was a photo of Kardashian with her arms outstretched in front of sister Jenner, 25, who looked on quizzically.

In her Instagram story, Kardashian revealed she couldn't actually see her sister: "Kendall was calling my name and I couldn’t see who it was but I saw the outline of her sparkly dress," she wrote adding a cry-laughing emoji.
