Kim Kardashian has arrived at the 2022 Met Gala, and stolen the show in a vintage Bob Mackie 'naked' dress – which was once worn by none other than Hollywood royalty Marilyn Monroe. Naturally, her new beau Pete Davidson was on her arm for the occasion.

Kardashian modernized the classic look with a bleach blonde, slicked-back hairdo, paired with sparkling diamond earrings and a white fur jacket. But the star went relatively minimal, letting the iconic dress shine. The Bob Mackie vintage dress was worn by Monroe during her birthday performance for President JFK in 1962. "What’s the most American thing you can think of? That’s Marilyn Monroe,” Kardashian told Vogue.

According to The Sun, the dress was last sold at auction in 2016 for an astonishing $4.8 million. In an interview with Vogue, Kim revealed that she didn't originally fit into the dress – and had to lose 16lbs for the occasion, which she managed to do by cutting out carbs and sugar for three weeks.

The newly-divorced star has marked her return to the iconic steps of the Met in serious style, having last attended the Met Gala in 2021 – in that incognito look.

Last year's theme was 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion', and Kardashian made quite the entrance in an all-black custom Balenciaga look which completely obscured her face, leaving only her iconic silhouette for fans to recognize her by – and a major, 75-inch, floor length ponytail. It was one of the most memorable looks of the evening12, and a bold move from one of the most photographed women in the world.

TMZ reported that Kanye West encouraged Kardashian to do the controversial look. Multiple sources said, 'he gave Kim the courage to push the envelope with creativity and people's imagination through art,' as per TMZ. Kardashian was ultimately joined on the red carpet by Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia.

The look spawned countless memes and endless criticism, with some saying Kardashian looked like a 'dementor' while others claimed she hadn't adhered to the strict Met Gala dress code. Kardashian soon hit back, however, in an Instagram post to her 253 million followers saying: ‘What’s more American than a T-shirt head to toe?!’
