Kim Kardashian Buys Princess Diana's Famous Cross Pendant

One of Princess Diana's favored jewelry pieces is now in the hands of Kim Kardashian. The reality television star acquired the "Attallah Cross" during Sotheby's London's Royal and Noble sale for $197,453.

Created in the 1920s by court jeweler Garrard, the pendant features flowery design details that are further accentuated by square-cut amethysts and approximately 5.25 carats of circular-cut diamonds.

The late Princess Diana famously wore the bejeweled cross in October 1987 with a Catherine Walker dress to a charity gala in support of Birthright; a charity working towards the protection of human rights during pregnancy and childbirth.

"This is a bold piece of jewelry by its size, color, and style which cannot fail to make a vibrant statement, whether it be of faith or fashion—or indeed both," Kristian Spofforth, Head of Jewellery of Sotheby’s London, said in a post-sale press release. "We are delighted that this piece has found a new lease of life within the hands of another globally famous name.”

The 1980s marked a significant time in Princess Diana's life when her growing confidence was paired with her bold fashion choices. According to Sotheby's, the Princess was spotted wearing the Attallah cross on several "mostly private occasions."

The princess's relationship with jeweler Garrard expands beyond the Attallah cross. In fact, Diana chose her engagement ring from them in 1981, and even wore their jewelry following her divorce from King Charles in 1996. Princess Diana made her last public appearance clad in Garrad's "Swan Lake necklace" which was a diamond and South Sea pearl piece made in collaboration with her.

This sale also takes place a few weeks before one of her most famous dresses by society dress-maker Victor Edelstein heads to auction at Sotheby's New York. The dress will be sold on January 27 as apart of their inaugural "The One" auction and is estimated to fetch nearly $120,000.
