Cynthia Nixon Shared Her Thoughts on Replacing Kim Cattrall in Sex and the City

Sharon Stone's name has been thrown in the running for a potential new Samantha.

Just as rumors of a new Sex and the City reboot made headlines, Kim Cattrall is reflecting on her time with the show — and confirming that she won't be revisiting her role as Samantha Jones. During an appearance on the Women's Prize for Fiction podcast, Cattrall said that as rumors have come and gone and fans have gotten hopeful for more SATC, they've often blamed her for the lack of new material from Carrie and Co., whether it was a third film or more TV episodes. Her thoughts come as Page Six reports that more episodes could land at HBO Max — without Samantha.

"It was a lot of fun and I loved it and being in new territory is always exciting. I felt like we were," she said. "Walking away, even if it's the only thing to do, you always feel, it's a bit of shame, I think. The taste of shame and you have to let go of that. You don't want to become that caged bird."

She went on to say that fans want her to suck it up and just bring Samanta back, whether or not she wants to. She noted that few people considered her feelings, since they were so desperate for more SATC.

"I remember getting a lot of grief on social media for not wanting to do a film. It was astonishing some of the things people wrote to me — 'I work in a bank and I don't like this person and I don't like the hours, but I do it. So you just do it!'" Cattrall added. "Give me what I want. I do it. I'm miserable, you be miserable, too."

Back in 2016, reports surfaced that "all of the women had signed on" for a third Sex and the City movie. Later, in 2017, Sarah Jessica Parker delivered some sad news, saying, "It's over ... we're not doing it."

Fans assumed that the project didn't move forward because of Cattrall's alleged demands, which "torpedoed" a third film. Then, during an episode of Piers Morgan's Life Stories, Cattrall confirmed that she'd turned down the project.

Finishing her interview on Women's Prize for Fiction, Cattrall said that she knows having the privilege to choose what projects to work on — and turn down — is special.

"I'm lucky enough to have the choice, not that I haven't worked for it. I have," Cattrall said. "It's something I feel very lucky to have and I'm very protective of it. I wouldn't be any good doing something that I really didn't want to do."
