The first season of Netflix's newest No. 1 streaming hit, Who Killed Sara? ends the same way it began: on that fateful August day in 2001, when Sara fall to her death in what appeared to be a tragic parasailing accident. The season finale takes viewers back to the day that started it all, filling in the gaps of what came before Sara's fall, while unearthing new information that prompts enough questions to fill my own wall-to-wall conspiracy board. If you haven't yet watched the season finale, be sure to watch it and uncover this final chapter in the mystery for yourself, before reading on.

Among the finale's barrel of revelations: the true identity of Diana the Huntress, Sara's secret journal detailing her mental health struggles, and the identity of the person who truly wanted Sara dead all those years ago. Plus: Alex unearths a skeleton in his backyard, Clara seems to have a sinister streak despite her seemingly selfless act for Chema and Lorenzo, César and Sergio are covering up the murders of women they've forced into sex work at their casino, and César did kill someone years ago (but it wasn't Sara, so it seems). As the show declares at the outset, and as Sara writes in her journal: "Very few of us are what we seem." So let's dig into the season finale of Who Killed Sara? and gear up to find the answers to all our questions when Season Two premieres on May 19.

Who killed Sara?

If only it were that simple. At the end of Season One, we still don't know who killed Sara (or if she's truly dead; after all, they never actually showed her body). We do know who wanted Sara dead all those years ago, though: Mariana, the Lazcano matriarch. In the finale, a flashback shows Elroy revealing to Mariana that Sara is pregnant with César's baby. At the lake house, Mariana takes Sara on a walk through the hills and cliffs surrounding the lake. She tells Sara that she knows she is pregnant, but that it is a blessing and that the Lazcanos will take care of her and the baby. She encourages Sara to do all the things she can't do once she starts showing; Mariana specifically recommends Sara try the parasail.

Later, Mariana threatens Elroy and tells him to tamper with the parasail. Elroy is concerned, and tries to get out of the plan. Mariana gives Elroy the pocket knife that Alex gave Chema for his birthday, and tells Elroy to use it to cut the straps. Elroy insists, “No, ma’am. This is too much. I won’t be able to." “You aren’t able? Well, Elroy, you were able to do much worse than that to your parents. Shall I remind you what happened to your mother?” Mariana says. There’s a flashback of a young Elroy riding his bicycle into a ladder while his mom is on it, causing her to fall to her death, and him walking away after setting the fire that killed his dad.

Mariana takes Elroy's hand and puts it up her dress, cooing threateningly. “You depend on me, Elroy. I’ve kept your crimes a secret because you’ve done me so many favors... you know I’m good at keeping skeletons buried. But I’m also good at digging them up. Do what you have to do. And don’t disappoint me.” We see Elroy struggle with what he's been told to do, but we don't see him actually cut the parasail straps.

Who is Diana the Huntress?

Towards the middle of the finale, Diana the Huntress is revealed to be Marifer. Marifer was Sara's best friend when they were teenagers, and she had a threesome with Alex and Chema back then. She is the mystery person who has been contacting Alex with information about the case, who told him that Nicandro (the other friend who was at the lake the day Sara died) was dead under suspicious circumstances. We see a flashback of Marifer calling Sara in tears the day they went up to the lake. She asks Sara to come over to her house, but Sara refuses. So why was Marifer so upset? And was she there, too, at the lake? Could Marifer somehow be involved in Sara's fall?

Whose skull did Alex dig up?

Okay, so—truly, the identity of the skull is anyone’s guess. Here’s one possibility: having read this fan discussion Reddit thread, it seems that the secret journal holds glimpses of Sara’s past that haven’t been mentioned throughout the show’s first season. If this Reddit user’s decoding is correct, it seems that Sara and Alex do not have the same father. Sara’s father struggled with psychological issues that Sara experienced too, though Alex did not know at the time. In her secret journal, Sara wonders if she is “crazy” like her father. So, perhaps, in the finale's flashback, it is Sara’s father who’s choking her, and César shoots her father because beneath his terrifying facade, he truly cares for Sara. Therefore, in this theory, the skull buried in their backyard is Sara’s father’s. There are many more theories and ideas at play about the skull and Sara's past, and in the teaser for next season we see parts of her sessions with a psychiatrist. Hopefully all will be revealed in the new season on May 19. Until then, fans are left to put the pieces together.
