The Key to Jennifer Lopez’s Updos? Root Cover Up (Yes, Seriously)

From the looks of it, Jennifer Lopez has the thickest of locks. Well, according to her longtime hairstylist, Chris Appleton, there’s an unexpected product that gives the 50-year-old “Ain’t Your Mama” singer’s updos even more umph.

You know when you spot J.Lo on the red carpet and think, ‘Wow, she has the thickest hair I’ve ever seen” (What? Just us?). Well, part of it is genetics, her haircare routine and supplements, but there’s also another styling trick that adds more dimension: root cover up.

Before you panic, it’s not because the ever-youthful J.Lo necessarily has grays (which, whatever if she did). Stapleton revealed on his Instagram Stories while glamming Lopez up for the IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards earlier this week that he used the root cover up to add depth to her updo.

“I love using @colorwowhair Root Cover Up, especially when doing a snatched look to add dimension,” he shared.

As you’ve probably noted from the name, Color Wow’s Root Cover Up is usually used to disguise thinning or greying hairlines, but it also comes in handy for those who don’t experience either. Why? Well, as Appleton explained, it helps your hair look thicker at the root so you can’t see your scalp at all.

According to Allure, Ouai founder and celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin uses the product as well. “I brush it along the part and around the face and the nape of the neck if I do a bun or ponytail to fill in any exposed scalp,” she told the mag. “It makes your hair appear fuller, especially in photos.”

Available in eight shades, the Color Wow Root Cover Up comes with a little brush and will set you back just $24 (it’s on sale, down from $35).

As ponytail enthusiasts, we’re definitely adding to cart.
