Kevin Smith Will Reboot Awesome '60s Bruce Lee Superhero Show

If you’re a fan of the Biff-Pow! Adam West version of Batman from the 1960s there’s a good chance you’re aware of its excellent companion series, The Green Hornet. And if you’re not, that’s okay, but The Green Hornet, was, arguably, one of the cooler, more understated superhero shows of all time. Well, understated might be a bit much, considering its bombastic theme song, but anyway, it looks like The Green Hornet is coming back, this time as a new animated series created by the most famous comic book dad of all time, Kevin Smith.

This week, Deadline reported Kevin Smith — the guy who brought you Mallrats, Clerks, and is one-half of Jay and Silent Bob — will oversee an all-new animated version of The Green Hornet. The masked vigilante originated in radio dramas in 1936, but most famously made a mark on pop culture with the 1960s show. And, part of the reason why was that the Green Hornet’s sidekick — Kato — was played by Bruce Lee. If you’ve never seen the Green Hornet, imagine it like this: What if Robin had been played by Jackie Chan and Batman was just some guy standing there? Yeah, that’s right, Robin would become the star. Which is what happened on The Green Hornet.

Smith’s new take on The Green Hornet will 100 percent include Kato, but any martial arts will come in the form of animation, rather than actual kicks and punches. That said, in a new statement, he promised that the new series will have something in it for all kinds of superhero fans: “We’ll be telling a tale of two Hornets – past and future – that spans generations and draws inspiration from a lifetime spent watching classic cartoons and amazing animation like Batman: The Animated Series, Heavy Metal, and Super Friends.

If Smith’s animated mash-up promise (Super Friends + Heavy Metal? Okay!) even comes close to being accurate, then The Green Hornet will rock. We can’t wait.

No release date for the new Green Hornet has been confirmed yet.
