Since the Season Two finale of Yellowstone, it feels like a hundred years have gone by. For those who might have forgotten, last summer's finale ended with more than a few bangs. Dan Jenkins is (presumably) dead at the hand of the Beck brothers, Kayce's son was kidnapped by white supremacists, Beth was beat within an inch of her life, and ultimately, Kayce stepped up as a father and led a charge to save Tate from some truly terrible people.

In this exclusive clip from the Season Three premiere, set to air this Sunday, June 21 at 9 p.m., viewers are getting to see a side of the Dutton family patriarch that they haven't really seen before. Sitting with Tate beside a campfire, John (Costner) sees how on edge his grandson is by the noises in the wilderness. When John asks if Tate is okay, the boy reveals that he's been having nightmares about being captured and held by those white supremacists. In a tender moment, John says, "Do you know what dreams are? It's your memories and imagination all mixed together in this soup of what's real and what's made up. But the thing about this soup is, you can change the ingredients."

It's a rare, vulnerable moment from John, but it also might shine a light on some of those flashbacks that John was having last season about his own father. As John reckons with the mortality of his own life, he's been reminded of his father quite a bit. Don't be surprised if that concept of dreams and memories comes into play quite a bit this season. If it's enough to inspire John to leave part of Yellowstone Ranch to Rip, then it can do just about anything.

If you're having trouble keeping up with what happened last season, Paramount Network is airing the whole second season this week, every night from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. If you're more of a binger, check out the whole thing, airing from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m this Sunday. That's a Father's Day gift that only requires some good snacks and a cowboy hat.
