Yes, models are just like us. They don’t only wear stilettos with heels that look like pins, or chunky sneakers typically worn by hip nursing home members. After all that stomping around fashion week, their cramped phalanges need a break, too: and Kendall Jenner proves that there is a more stylish way of doing it. Last night, she stepped out in New York City wearing a luxurious lounge look that included weathered Birkenstocks with a pair of knit grey and white ribbed socks. While this ensemble could have easily gone the granola route, Jenner elevated the socks and sandals combo with a burgundy mohair sweater and a pair of tailored black low-slung trousers.
Socks and sandals have been on runways—and on the feet of celebrities—for years now. (And why not? It’s like a foot massage, but embedded in the shoe!) Our retiree-age male relatives, as well as Justin Bieber, have been wearing the look for eons, and it even reappeared as a major trend back on the Fall 2018 men’s runways. Actress Sophie Turner practically wears socks and sandals everywhere, though as she later pointed out in a recent tweet, it’s mostly to walk her dog.
All of the aforementioned socks and sandals moments feel very casual and off-duty, but Jenner proves that they can be taken out of the locker room (or the farmer’s market) and for a night on the town, as long as there is some polish involved. (See the butter-soft, rich fabric of her sweater, or the razor-sharp pleat on her pants.) Plus, the sandal’s cork sole made a refined cameo on the Proenza Schouler Spring 2020 runway just this week. It seems that Jenner isn't just comfortable, but comfortably on-trend, too.
