At the beginning of quarantine, everyone was wearing a tie-dye sweatsuit. It felt like a look while still very much being house clothing you can wear from your bed to the couch. But as stay-at-home orders extended and many offices addressed most likely not re-opening until 2021, the tie-dye sweatsuits slowly began disappearing from our Instagram feeds. It’s almost as if we all looked around and thought, “Oh, so this is really happening?” and started to scramble for real clothing that would make us feel something. Anything, really.
Watching the celebrity evolution of quarantine dressing has also been interesting, to say the least. Jennifer Lopez continues to show off her abs. Britney Spears is giving us 360-degree video views of her floral crop top collection. Tracee Ellis Ross makes the case for wearing Manolo pumps to your kitchen. And while most celebrities have gone from wearing nothing but sweats to everything but sweats in a matter of weeks, Kelly Ripa has taken a step in a different direction. She isn’t letting summer go without a fight, and for that reason, she apparently won’t stop wearing caftans, which are just as comfortable as sweatpants but not nearly as casual.
On her most recent Live with Kelly & Ryan, Ripa wore an Etro oversized caftan dress. It’s one of numerous appearances she’s now made in the summer staple. Caftans are of Asiatic origin and have been around for hundreds of years, even serving as a symbol of royalty in some cultures. But in the United States, many (like Ripa and Lopez) wear caftans during the summer because they’re so lightweight and loose, which is what made them popular in cultures with hotter climates originally.
What was extra noteworthy about Ripa’s latest caftan appearance was that it was by celeb-beloved Etro, the designer label known for its iconic paisley patterns. The brand specializes in garments that are loose and colorful. It makes capes that can also be worn as sarongs, if you’re creative and looking to channel that vacation energy at home, and it makes tunics Kate Middleton would totally wear on Zoom. But most notably, it makes the type of loose-fitting dresses that Ripa has been living in during quarantine. And right now, Etro is on sale at Nordstrom for hundreds of dollars less than usual.
Etro is known for more than summer wardrobe essentials, some of which Chrissy Teigan has worn on vacation. It also makes a great red-carpet look, like Taylor Swift’s custom gown from the most recent Golden Globes. So whether you’re looking to add some more color to your indoor wardrobe or for an comfortable alternative that reminds you of the beach, Etro is likely to have something you’ll also want to wear outside when this is all done. The only thing Etro doesn’t make? A tie-dye sweatsuit. But maybe that’s for the best right now.
