Kelly Clarkson is one of music’s greats—right up there with Reba McEntire, Shania Twain, and Faith Hill. But early on in her career, the “Since You Been Gone” singer never imagined ranking alongside such incredibly talented women, let alone hanging out backstage with them. But both happened, and years later, Clarkson and Hill reminisced about it all on The Kelly Clarkson Show.

Hill appeared as a guest on Tuesday’s episode of the talk show to discuss her return to acting in the Yellowstone prequel series 1883. But before they got into the gritty Western details, Clarkson couldn’t help but bring up a gem from their past.

“This is one of my best moments of my life,” she began. “I’ve had a few times that I’ve randomly run into [Hill] and pretended it was totally normal ... do you remember this night, though?”

On the screen behind the singers appeared a throwback photo of them standing next to Twain and McEntire, Twain clearly dressed up in her glitzy performance best. “I went to go see Shania, you did too, and I was with Reba,” Clarkson explained. It was a lightbulb moment for Hill, who then exclaimed, “Yes!”

Although Clarkson has become a pop star in her own right, the moment left her starstruck. “I was pretending I was Meryl Streep right there. I was like, so chill about it,” she laughed. “But legit, I was so excited.” Hill chimed in in agreement: “Same! No, same.”

The pair moved on to discussing 1883. Hill revealed that she swore she would “never, ever” act again after appearing in the 2004 film Stepford Wives. “It wasn’t the best experience, so I said I would never, ever, ever, ever, do another—anything like that,” she said, adding that the waiting periods between scenes were not her cup of tea.

Over the years, she read a lot of other scripts, but “nothing hit me, or the timing wasn’t right,” the “Breathe” singer explained. Then 1883 came along and instantly won her over—the script was “so incredibly well written,” she said. “I had honestly never read anything like it. So we just made the decision to do it.”

Just like that, she and her husband Tim McGraw became Margaret and James Dutton, matriarch and patriarch of the Dutton family. And she’s so glad they did. Ahead of the series premiere, she reflected on the experience on Instagram, writing: “I have never worked harder on a project or had as much fun as I’ve had being a part of @1883official.”

The pair have since revealed that they won’t reprise their roles in Yellowstone, but would be open to another spinoff written by series creator and director Taylor Sheridan. “I mean, it depends,” Hill told Entertainment Tonight in May. McGraw agreed, adding: “It depends on the show and the material. I’d be happy to read one if he brought it our way.”
