Bill & Ted Face the Music's first trailer is finally here to brighten up our day and remind us to be excellent to each other.

The short teaser sets up the main plot of the eagerly-awaited third movie as Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) are set on a task to unite the world and "save reality as we know it", all by writing one song.

They're struggling to write it though, but have the genius idea to go to the future where they already have written the song and "take it from ourselves". "How is that stealing if we're stealing it from ourselves, dude?," Bill points out.

But in the future, they seem to meet a very different version of themselves...

Today (June 9) marks the franchise's official day (because 6/9) and this morning saw the first poster released for the threequel.

In the image, the dudes are snapped from behind as they walk towards a glowing telephone box, and the tagline promises that "the future awaits".

Directed by Dean Parisot, Bill & Ted Face the Music follows the now middle-aged, rock-and-rolling besties, as they set out on a new adventure after receiving a mysterious message telling them that only their song can save life as we know it.

During their latest trippy exploits, the pair encounter a whole bunch of historical figures, getting help from their children—played by Ready or Not star Samara Weaving and Atypical actor Brigette Lundy-Paine–along the way.

Glee's Jayma Mays, William Sadler, Hal Landon Jr, Kristen Schaal, Holland Taylor and Kid Cudi also feature.

For those not up to scratch on this most bodacious of holidays, June 9 (6/9) is referred to as Bill & Ted Day among fans due to the classic "69 dudes!" moment from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Bill & Ted Face the Music is currently set for release on August 21.
