Katrina Carter believed to be first woman to coach a Nashville boys high school basketball team
Hunters Lane has hired Katrina Carter as its new boys basketball coach, the school announced Tuesday afternoon.
Carter, a Hillsboro alum, is believed to be the first woman to coach a high school boys basketball team in Nashville.
“I am delighted that Coach Carter has accepted this important position. She is the perfect candidate to lead our boys to success,” said Susan Kessler, Hunters Lane’s executive principal. “She is an outstanding classroom educator and a strategic powerhouse in the game of basketball, and I am very optimistic about where Coach Carter will take our boys' varsity team.”

After playing college basketball at Akron, Carter returned to her alma mater as the girls basketball coach. She led the Burros to a 35-1 record and the Class 3A state championship in 2008-09. Carter later coached at Pearl-Cohn and Whites Creek.
While Carter may be the first female to be a boys basketball coach in Nashville, she isn't the first in TSSAA state history. Cherie Abner recently completed her first season as boys basketball coach at Westmoreland, in Sumner County.
In addition, there's Dawn Barger, the only woman to lead a boys high school basketball team to a state title in Tennessee history. Barger coached Lake County to the Class 1A state championship in 2011 and later coached the boys team at Stewarts Creek.
Former Vanderbilt women's point guard Dee Davis interviewed for the Antioch boys job in 2019.
Hunters Lane is coming off a 9-19 season in which it went 2-8 in District 10-4A.
