Trench coats have long been a staple in fall wardrobes everywhere, but Katie Holmes just put an unexpected twist on the classic outerwear.
The Dawson’s Creek alum recently stepped out in New York City to support former Cuomo administration official Melissa DeRosa at the launch for her new memoir, What’s Left Unsaid. The fete took place at the historic Hotel Chelsea, where Katie showed out in a deconstructed khaki trench. While the piece retained many of the coat’s signature motifs—including a belted waist, tortoiseshells buttons, and boxy pockets—it was cut to resemble something similar to a harness, which was then layered over a matcha-green maxi dress with accordion pleated details.
The actor finished off the look with simple black elements, including transparent tights, a pair of shiny Mary Jane shoes, and a small purse with a long shoulder strap. She accessorized sparingly, adding layers of delicate gold chain necklaces with various pendants.
Katie is clearly a fan of sophisticated statement dresses.
This past summer, she appeared at the red carpet opening of the American Ballet Theatre’s Like Water for Chocolate, where she looked gorgeous in a distressed knit maxi dress from Chloé. The dress featured large swaths of gaps in the knit fabric across the torso and the legs. To coordinate, she added glittering black ballet flats from Miu Miu, a black rectangular Chloé clutch, and layers of gold pendant necklaces.
The actor talked to Bazaar last year about dressing up for high-profile events.
“We live in a world where we have a premiere and you want to look nice, and it turns into being a fashion person, and I’m like, ‘Well, I just like to look nice, I’m not really a fashion person.’ We all just want to look good,” she said.
