No one ever really knows if something will go viral or not. The Internet is unpredictable — you can’t just make a meme on command. It has to be the right moment, the right look, and the right photo. We learned this with Katie Holmes, who made Instagram waves with her Khaite cashmere bra and barely-buttoned cardigan set last week. Seated front row today at Elie Tahari’s Spring 2020 show—this time in a very modest cream cardigan sweater and a denim button up—I asked her if she knew the navel-baring look would create such a stir. Holmes, as luminous and fresh-faced as ever, simply shook her head and said “No.”
Holmes had a simple explanation when asked why she bought the $520 soft-cup bralette and $1,540 fisherman-ribbed sweater — which she purchased online all by herself (Stars, they’re just like us!). “It was very comfortable and easy and I think they [Khaite] do such a good job with creating beautiful luxury items,” she said. “They are very accessible and classic so you can have it for a long time, and I like to shop that way. I’m not always buying new stuff and I can wear it again.” Level-headed and sustainable! Holmes’s publicist chimed in, as well, with a message for Khaite, noting that the label “should make another color!” The company currently offers the style in only one color, a dark oatmeal it calls “barley,” which at the moment is sold out.
