Katie Holmes is bringing back a controversial Y2K fashion trend.

The 43-year-old attended the iHeart Radio Jingle Ball on Friday wearing a strapless mini dress over a pair of jeans, signalling the dress-over-jeans trend could be on the verge of a comeback.

The actor completed the look with a pair of sneakers under her bootcut jeans, a nose ring, and a black shoulder bag.

The trend was quickly picked up by social media users, with one person commenting on Instagram: “No we cannot bring back the dress jeans combo NO.”

“Does she have a stylist? If not please call me, if she does please do call me xoxo,” another person said.

A third person added: “I WILL NOT go back!!!!! DO YOU HEAR ME???? NO!!!!!!!!”

Other users on Twitter were more supportive of the look, with one person writing: “Me defending Katie Holmes dressing like 2002 in 2022 like my life depended on it.”

“Y’all got to stop posting that Katie Holmes outfit because the more I see it the more I’m here for it,” another user wrote.

"Let Katie Holmes wear what she wants," another said in the actor's defence.

However, some were still vehemently against the trend’s renaissance, with one Twitter user writing: “Katie Holmes should be in prison for this.”

Another added: “This trend reared its ugly head years ago and, honestly, how dare Katie Holmes have the audacity to try to bring it back.”

"Please for the love of goddess keep this era of fashion in the archives. Love Katie Holmes… but I detest this cursed red carpet era," a third person wrote.

The divisive trend was once a red carpet staple, with Disney stars of the mid-2000s such as Ashley Tisdale and Miley Cyrus being fans of the look.

The dress over jeans trend isn’t the first to return to red carpets this year. Rihanna sported several Y2K trends during her pregnancy earlier this year including low-rise jeans and crop tops.

Model Bella Hadid has also embraced the era, wearing low-rise trousers and denim jackets, and singer Dua Lipa has worn several Y2K looks including a bandana in her hair and micro mini skirts with knee-high boots.

While it's not unusual for fashion trends from bygone eras to make a comeback, we can only hope that low-rise jeans is one trend that stays in the past.
