Interviewing celebrities can be stressful, which is why I have bookmarked for future reference this viral video of Kate Winslet giving a kid reporter doing her first ever interview a generous pep talk. The young journalist, a child named Martha, was interviewing Winslet about Avatar: The Way of Water for Logo!, per People, and revealed it was her first time.
“Okay, well, guess what,” Winslet says in the video, getting into pep-talk stance with her hands on her knees. “When we do this interview, it's going to be the most amazing interview ever. And do you know why? Because we've decided that it is going to be.” She went on, “And you can ask me anything that you want, and you don't have to be scared. Everything's going to be amazing. Okay, you've got this.”
After their chat, which I'm sure was an amazing interview, Winslet and Martha took a selfie together to commemorate the big moment. The clip was soon inescapable on Twitter, with commenters praising Winslet for comforting the young girl. They also called her “mommy.”
Reassuring a nervous baby journalist is, of course, just one reason to love Kate Winslet. She also knows when to push back against more experienced, bad-faith questioning. In another recent viral clip, Winslet said if she could turn back the clock to the beginning of her career, she would have used her voice differently—particularly when it came to questions about her body.
She told the interviewer, “I would have said to journalists, ‘Don't you dare treat me like this. I'm a young woman, my body is changing, I'm figuring it out, I'm deeply insecure. I'm terrified. Don't make this any harder than it already is. That's bullying.’”
I have a good feeling that Martha is going to be the kind of journalist Winslet would be proud to work with.
