The royals attended the Queen’s state funeral yesterday, and Prince George and Princess Charlotte were seen accompanying their parents, Kate Middleton and Prince William. Not in attendance, however? The couple’s youngest son, Prince Louis.

While Louis is only 4, he has been attending royal events recently—and apparently William and Kate initially wanted him to attend his great-grandmother's funeral. “Kate and William flip-flopped over whether Louis should attend the Queen’s funeral,” a source tells Us Weekly, adding that they “came to the conclusion that the procession and service would be too lengthy and overwhelming for their youngest to handle and digest.”

So, Louis “stayed with the nanny,” while his older siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince George accompanied their parents. Royal expert Myko Clelland also noted to Us Weekly that “I wouldn’t be surprised if [William and Kate] even asked the children themselves if they’d like to go. I think they very much love their family and I think they take that as their first priority.”

Prince George and Princess Charlotte handled themselves amazingly at the funeral (especially considering how long it was), and Charlotte was even seen reminding her older brother to bow. Although Kate Middleton was also on hand to remind her kids of royal protocol and was filmed subtly saying “curtsy” to them.

Charlotte also wore her first piece of significant royal jewelry to her great-grandmother’s funeral, a diamond horseshoe brooch that was reportedly given to her by Queen Elizabeth herself and honors her love of horses.
