Plaid may be a preppy winter classic, but when Kate Middleton dons the standout check, you know it has a special meaning. Today, that meaning was a nod to Scotland, as the Duchess and her husband Prince William sent out a special message to frontline workers at NHS Tayside in Scotland in honor of Burns Night. The holiday, which honors the renowned Scottish poet Robert Burns, is traditionally celebrated with haggis, readings of Burns's works, and toasts, but with the ongoing global pandemic, celebrations are set to look different this year, especially for the country's healthcare workers.

As a gesture of thanks, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge sent a message to the COVID-19 response team at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee who work in the COVID-19 Intensive Care and High Dependency Units.

"We know Burns Night is a special evening for Scots around the world – a time to come together to eat, drink and to celebrate the life and work of Robert Burns," Will said in the message. "As a token of our appreciation, we’ve teamed up with NHS Charities Together to provide you with a Haggis dinner."

Prince Charles and Camilla are also marking Burns Night with special messages. Prince Charles can be seen reciting the words of Auld Lang Syne on the Clarence House Instagram account. He also posted a celebratory message: “In many ways, Burns Night is a celebration like no other: Scottish to the core, yet of international appeal, for arguably no other poet in history has ever been so celebrated as Robert Burns.”

His wife Camilla also shared a favorite Robert Burns poem, "My Heart's in the Highlands," in honor of the occasion.
